Well, the goal of a recent package I received is to make mine a lot more simple!
My prize was a starter kit from healthsimple. They have four different versions – one for educators, one for insulin calculation and dosing at mealtime, one for insulin calculation and carb counting at mealtime, and one for pumpers. A rep from the company contacted me a little over a week ago to see which version would fit my needs best, and a few short days later the insulin pumper’s version was at my doorstep (well, I don’t exactly have a doorstep, but a note that I had a package was in my PO Box).
The package was bursting at the seams and had two levels of materials.
Included was a logbook, which looks pretty helpful and inclusive as logbooks go:
There were also CarbWise cheat sheets that you can use to calculate your dosing.
One of my favorite parts of the kit are the carb counting stickers. I have a habit of buying large packages of food and dividing it into snack size portions. With these stickers, you can label your food containers. I imagine, if I was a parent sending a kid to school, this would be especially helpful.
Another part that I think would be most helpful to caregivers is the Care Plan Worksheets. You can customize and include ideal ranges, carb counts for meals, contact information, and a large section for additional notes. There is a place for the teacher/nurse/day care worker/grandparent/friend’s parent to include information as well.
If you are ‘new’ to carb counting, the next part of the kit will probably be especially helpful. Included is a set of 48 common food items in flashcard and magnet form with nutritional information. If you feel like you have a pretty good handle on carb counting you can use them as a reminder. Or do what I’m planning and use them to decorate your fridge (the pictures are amazing!)
Whew! A lot of goodies for a starter kit, don’t ya think?! While most of it is not material that I will be using on a daily basis, it is nice to have it around and good to see that there are companies who are trying to make life easier for diabetics.
Plus it always feels good to WIN something!!! 😀
