I think it is important to mention that the stem cells that were used were from the patients’ own bodies – not embryonic stem cells.
The patients were given the treatment within a few months of diagnosis before all beta cells were destroyed. They were given drugs to release stem cells into the blood stream, which were then harvested. Then they were given chemo to kill off their immune systems. Finally, the stem cells were infused back into the body.
Of the 14 participants, 12 stopped taking insulin shortly after the infusion. Five of them still do not need injections.
Obviously this is of little help to those of us diagnosed long ago with no beta cells left.
