If At First You Don’t Succeed…

Skydiving Is Not For You!

I jumped out of a plane at 13,500 feet! By choice!

The Director of Student Activities at the school I work at was hosting a skydiving trip for the students and needed more chaperones, which meant a free trip for me. The shirts are always funny but you only get one if you jump, so I had to do it!

It was actually pretty fun and not as scary as I thought it would be. Did you know the human body falls at an average of 120 mph? We were in a freefall for about 1 min before the tandem instructor pulled the chute and we floated to the ground for another 4-5 minutes before our picture perfect landing.

To answer some FAQs that I have already been asked:

No. I am not afraid of heights like the rest of my family apparently is. It was more a fear of the parachute not opening!

Yes. It is safe for a diabetic to jump out of a plane (thanks Mom). My blood sugar was actually excellent the whole day!

No. I did not wear my pump during the jump. I know it is attached to my body but I kept having these visions of it floating away from me at 10,000 feet and it is kinda expensive. There was actually a fight between the other chaperones about who would ‘get’ to hold it…don’t ask, I have no idea. 🙂

Yes. I would do it again, but only if it was free. It is just too expensive any other way!

You can view a short video of my jump at the link listed below. You have to enter an e-mail address to view the video, but it does say that you can opt-out of receiving any e-mails from them. View the full version when I am in CA for Christmas.

  2. Hey Sara, jumping out of a perfectly good plane is fantastic, isn’t it?

I did it several years ago and it was just wonderful. I can still feel the ‘rush’ from it all.

Like you, I’d love to do it again – if it were free!

  3. See George, that is the funny thing about it. I loved skydiving but I would never even consider bungee jumping!!

  4. For this you needed a Master’s Degree? Mom must be so proud of you. We are. We miss you but we have no intention of following you up there to see you!

  5. What a brave soul you are!
Looks like you enjoy adventure (and a bargain).
    Have a good weekend.

  6. WOW. I never pictured you as the sky-diving type! I’ve been tempted to attempt it myself, but I’m scared my nerves can’t handle everything up to the time I actually jump. I figured I’ll have blacked out or barfed before I even step out of the plane! YOU GO GIRL!!!
